  • Wear the proper safety gear:
    • An approved helmet.
    • Eye protection (goggles or face shield)
    • Gloves with good grip. 
    • Over-the-ankle boots.
    • Long-sleeve shirt and pants.
  • Read, understand, and practice all rider safety precautions as outlined in the ATV owner’s manual and safety labels on the ATV.
  • Learn to operate an ATV safely- take a safety training class.
  • Properly maintain the ATV and keep it in good condition.
  • Ride within your skill level.

How to Start an ATV

To start an ATV, all you need to remember is the BONE-C checklist:

  1. Brakes – Ensure the parking brake is on. 
  2. On position – Ensure the fuel valve and ignition key are ON.
  3. Neutral – Put the gear shifter in neutral (N) or park (P).
  4. Engine – Ensure the engine stop switch is in the RUN or ON position.
  5. Choke – If the engine is cold, turn on the choke before starting the ATV.
